cantlin noahchestnut blaine pilhofer IMO: the thing is that it really doesn't "Scale". The problem that befalls most local news sites isn't some sort of intrinsic failure, it's that they get acquired and conglomerated and paying management layers take it from black to red.

cantlin noahchestnut blaine pilhofer Stand alone local news sites aren't hugely profitable or anything, but the ones that have stayed solo tend to persist and be fairly stable financially. It's the ones that get purchased and rolled up that have consistent problems.

cantlin noahchestnut blaine pilhofer Which is why I like the idea of bundling. You get someone buy into the apparatus of a large news organization and they funnel it to a smaller relevant org that is independent but dependable and useful to the reader.

cantlin noahchestnut blaine pilhofer It would be great to have a central franchise that hands down three ring binders for how to set up a local news site and makes money maintaining the technical infrastructure + initial fee for use of a trusted brand name, freeing locals to do it themselves.
