                1. As a Jewish man who has dated Jewish and non-Jewish women I have seen a bunch of reactions. I think that there are particular cultures that can have a hard time meshing well. That shouldn't stop you from dating someone, good relationships work over it. Bad ones end and that's ok.

Generally, as a Reform Jew, the women I have the hardest time meshing relationship-wise with tend to indeed be middle-of-America/southern Christian women, though I'm dating one now so that hasn't stopped me. There are good discussions that could be had there. Better than we saw.

There are interesting clashes for sure, but often, and I would bet in the case of the article currently circulating, the issues come from not understanding Jewish observance as practiced, clashing privilege, and an incompatibility in how we perceive religion, so there's that.

I don't like to talk much about Jewish privilege vs oppression. But I think that where religion has come into play in my breakups (which isn't every time), it is because almost any Jew has had the exp. of being under attack for being Jewish. Most WASP-types never have felt that.

This is a generalization, of course, there's always feminist issues in play as well, but that's a different flavor (though not lesser degree) of attack IMO. This is a significant life experience to not share with your significant other.

It has expressed itself in a few different ways in my relationships. Usually dealing with questions of how much, where, why and in what way I pray/practice as a Jew. And when dealing with political questions that center Judaism.

Weird but true, one of the biggest religion-focused arguments I have had in a relationship was about why Jewish services have Hebrew in them when modern Christians have left Latin mostly behind. And then there's questions of Israel. Often.

In my exp: Women who are White+Christian and don't understand their own privilege have a tendency to see Jewish cultural cohesion as limiting and a personal attack, which is something visible in that Op Ed IMO.

It isn't, but I'm sympathetic to someone who feels that way. Less so to those who don't interrogate that feeling. It's too bad because the form and forum would have been an excellent place for the author to explore this in herself. It would have been a more interesting piece.

But in general, religion and race aside, if you can't gently privilege check your significant other with respect and get a respectful thoughtful response back then you're in a bad relationship.

There is clearly an interest in attacking the author, but I don't really think that's productive. I would be far more interested in turning this into a learning opportunity. I hope that a viable debate and counter op-ed could come out.
