      1. I'm reading a good thread about how liberals reacting fatalisticly in regard to changes coming as a result of school shootings is self defeating and I agree with all of it but still feel extremely fatalistic about changes to gun laws. :/

This is a perfect sample of how I feel as a liberal in America in general. Sure something could be done about X, but I honestly believe we'll all be ashes before we actually achieve X anyway.

I don't think liberalism can face the problems of today unless the entire system fully breaks down; because the ideology is built on the idea that we're arcing towards justice, that incremental changes and set backs inevitably lead to utopia.

How does one disabuse the majority of the left of this notion? I mean they still hold it now, with everything that's going on, so I'm thinking: total economic collapse or nuclear war.

For sure, elements of the left don't hold with incrementality, but the people with the majority of the money and influence do, sooooooo.

I guess what I'm saying is: if you're an optimistic leftist, I'm very happy for you, but I don't think it's particularly productive. I think the only approach that will render success comes from the assumption our philosophy has failed.
