DanielleAlberti mkramer I don't think it's a conscious thing, and I think it matters that people have one, more than employer info on it, in terms of identity. But the same exact situation with ID cards is true in other cities but DC is the only place I observe this phenomenon.

DanielleAlberti mkramer WaPo has security cards (the NYC office has two). In NYC, it's always on belts, or in pockets/purses, in DC it's very often worn around the neck.

DanielleAlberti mkramer This sort thing was baffling to me for a while until I realized DC (SF too) is not a dressed up town. Bragging by wearing an expensive suit or purse is looked down upon. But bragging you work somewhere important enough to need security? That's an ok identity show off.
