what a surprise
-
Generally the problem that Facebook will always have, regardless of adjustments, is that the average user *wants* to be in a bubble that reinforces their own ideas and prejudices and the more you optimize for the users' stated/acted desire the more uninformed they will be.
-
The New York Times shares researched, backed up, articles. Your aunt shares racist Minion memes. Friends and Family might be what users say they want, but it isn't exactly great for the rest of the world to give it to them. Does FB have responsiblity here? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
At the end of the day Facebook's goals will never be aligned with the media's because your aunt *wants* a feed filled with racist Minion memes and if Facebook doesn't give her that she'll leave.
-
That's why I will never consider Facebook a media company: media companies tell people what they should want or think; Facebook just gives people what the *people* say they want.

Additional thoughts below. Worth adding that 'what the people say they want' and 'what the people actually want' isn't always aligned. The best media sits in the middle, providing people with what they didn't know they wanted. adamklevy/954407299468152833
