    OwenGood byJoshuaDavis BenKuchera ...but w/o labor protections only be gained through participation there is a larger set of people to be held accountable besides just the writers taking the jobs. I agree, no writer should take a free gig. But the endless unpaid writing positions are not just due to writers.

      OwenGood byJoshuaDavis BenKuchera There's a reason that, when I worked with students, I heavily pushed them to publish for themselves on their own sites. I think the concept of writing without pay cannot be avoided, but by doing it for yourself at least no one but you profits by it.

        OwenGood byJoshuaDavis BenKuchera That said, there's definite benefit from getting an editor. I think it's bad that anyone would work for free, bad for them, bad for the publication and bad for the marketplace. But the situation that pushes writers towards working for free isn't on them.

          OwenGood byJoshuaDavis BenKuchera The blame & shouldn't be aimed at people at the bottom tier of the industry who want a break. It should be aimed at the publications that would push writers to work for free, that would create an ecosystem out of zero compensation, and the lack of laws that allows it
