It's easy to forget this, but self-hosting video content for small media or individuals is very much an unsolved problem.

Hosting video is worthless to YouTube unless they can run ads on it. It costs them infrastructure & earns nothing. Of course this occurs.

Speaks to the unrealized problem of pivoting to video - hosting streaming video is *expensive.* Crowd funding is great for creators/viewers

It's awful for YouTube as a platform and a business. No one really thought this through until now, but it is Time To Have A Talk about it.

I'm not excusing YouTube's rollout or behavior here. This was badly done, badly messaged, and way too specifically targeted

This marks something real interesting. For YouTube to make this move, monetization of video must be moving away from preroll in a big way.

Like turning off external tweet counts this is the sort of move that screams 'our infrastructure is costing more than it is earning'.

It also is an indicator that users would rather pay directly for video (or deal with product placement) than deal with preroll...

... which points to the fundamental problem w/Google's AMP-style attempts to fix the web. The problem is ad tech, not what holds that tech
        1. …in reply to @Chronotope
By trying to change how the web works instead of fixing the advertising technology they're destroying their own ecosystem by repelling users

Anywho. Platforms are not solved for all content types. In fact they are not solved for most, prob some opportunities there.
