    1. A thought on npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2016/11/23/503146770/npr-finds-the-head-of-a-covert-fake-news-operation-in-the-suburbs - infiltrating far right trust networks and only turning it into personal profit is apolitical greed.

But if we did it in a way where the existence of success actively exploited those networks to train readers in media literacy?...

Like if Facebook blocks fake news, these networks of consumers will move to another network. So how can we challenge the humans involved?
      1. …in reply to @Chronotope
Arguably liberal 'block people w/challenging posts on Facebook' helped build a wall inside which ideas could go viral on FB w/o challenge.

So to flip the situation, how can we enter these spaces, challenge the assumptions, and do so at low cost and risk?

My favorite thing about Lying About The Past ( theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/05/how-the-professor-who-fooled-wikipedia-got-caught-by-reddit/257134/ ) is that everyone involved thinks more critically at the end of it.

The point is that being hoaxed makes everyone think more critically, but they have to realize they were being hoaxed for it to work.

Clearly the first part is a solved problem, so how can we guarantee the 2nd? Can we treat media illiteracy through hoaxes & do so ethically?
                1. …in reply to @Chronotope
The idea that we can somehow end the distribution of fake news is technocratic nonsense, so alternatives are worth thinking about.

A fair place to merge in thinking on how we do remote & citizen education. Also media literacy pedagogy. We should read up more on both.

As free media we should reject autocratic calls to censor or control distribution and consider this through the lens of education.
