The entirety of WaPo sold for half or less than the valuation of SmartNews. This is more than 25% the value of the NYT.

All of Tronc, which owns the paper listed in the SmartNews preview image, has a market cap of $431.40M, $70-170 million less than this app.

The LA Times, which is being used in the SmartNews preview, is a mere fraction of a total company which is still worth less than this app.

I just downloaded the app & opened it. First story is from The Huffington Post. HuffPo was sold for ~$200M less than this app is valued for.

Exactly what value is it adding to these publishers? Speed? Less advertising? Suggestions?

The building that once was filled with Tribune Media is worth more than Gawker. kelseymsutton/770744253949550597

But also that huge building still isn't worth half-as-much as the valuation for a company that aggregates news from other companies.

Good time to note that Gawker was sold for about 1/5th the value of a SmartNews, an app that does little but aggregate Gawker and others.

SmartNews... which does not create its own content, nor does it *host* content outside of aggregation, is now valued at 2/3s of the entirety of Automattic, which runs the hosting services for many major news websites along with a significant chunk of the web.

Politico, which reportedly brings in $200m/year, apparently was sold for 1/2 a SmartNews. Just a fun little comparison worth noting.

The main thing I wonder when I see these stories which emphasize that they are using AMP and aggregating Local pubs now is how they keep going when many of the publishers they aggregate die out because they can't even get close to a $10m investment?

Anyway, a fun little fact to leave you on: 5 years ago at the beginning of this thread SmartNews was worth less than BuzzFeed's estimated value. Now it is worth $500 million more.
