I wonder if voters see being liberal or conservative as more a tribal affiliation than an ideological one. Loyalty instead of policy...
-
It would go a lot towards explaining why this election is so *personal* to people. Mby Trump and Sanders are different in that way...
-
They aren't just outside the political establishment, Trump and Sanders are outside the respective political tribes....
-
And so, aided by the false closeness of social media, people are pledging loyalty to tribes around those personal brands, not the parties.
-
Think about how many people have spent decades "voting the party" and not having their needs or wants meet, on both sides...
-
And so then the appeal isn't political either. It's the promise that you no longer have to sublimate your desires for the good of the whole.
-
People become willing to say and do almost anything because they are defending their tribe, one which is *finally* about their needs.
-
Not that this suggests any solutions. Just a thought.

I guess the solution is to actually educate voters in who and what they're voting for instead of handing them a slate. That's long term tho.
