      overlayered willwilkinson Yeah, I don't agree with everything Zuboff has to say or particularly recommend the book (I'm like 14 pages into notes on it) but it does go into exactly that and has a model explaining exactly why platforms are incentivized by surveillance models to do exactly that.

    overlayered willwilkinson I'm not saying ads are the best thing in the world, but I do think that the surveillance model intentionally creates additional labor for users to better ads focused on personalized targeting and that the best way to assure that doesn't deform a platform is to create alternatives

      overlayered willwilkinson The internet has to live with capitalism. Ads can be both the best and worst solution for that. I think we need to consider patterns of platform and system development that optimize towards the best side of that spectrum.
