clancynewyork Yeah, a good note: when people talk about identity graphs or probabilistic identifiers they usually mean a mesh of different fingerprints that is associated or tied by some factor, sometimes as solid as a direct ID, sometimes as loose as a cookie ID or an IP address...

clancynewyork The idea of these identity graph systems is to try and tie together the fingerprints of different devices in order to make identification easier when there is less data and to find opportunities to split a record for precision purposes...

clancynewyork So a better metaphor might be if the gov't tracked you by associating your driver's license w/a bunch of records that contained date and frequently used words in a particular coffee shop & then any time anyone had a similar weight or set of words they would be considered you...

clancynewyork Only those people who might or might not be you would occasionally say their neighborhood out loud & then the data file that has indicators that this a person is you grows with more data from more different people accidentally defined as you until it becomes basically useless.

clancynewyork Modern use of browser fingerprints is akin to if you got a loyalty card when you purchased coffee from a coffee shop whose only data point is the week you purchased coffee and how many cups. Then that card could log you in to your bank, except the card's value updates w/purchases

clancynewyork Is this card a unique property of you? Yes. Does it uniquely describe only you? No. Can it be considered permanent? No.

clancynewyork Does its constant shifting data require a never ending sequence of increasing surveillance and growing records gobbling up more and more data for no good outcome? Yes.
