              1. Is Facebook possibly overstaffed? Yeah, possibly. Is FB's possible over-staffing a tactic to quash potential competition by starving them of engineers w/specific specialties, while giving themselves basically unlimited room to pivot at no real cost to core business? Yeah, prob.

Like, assuming that they actually are overstaffed (I'm not making that assumption), big tech cos are not accidentally overstaffed. They are intentionally built to capture engineers in the hope that they can retain them and avoid generating competitors out of their own ranks.

And I'm not assuming they are overstaffed because that assumes that big tech cos *can* function at a smaller level, but their organizational and engineering efficiency problems are likely not *actually* solvable by just randomly chopping off 25% staff...

These are big campuses b/c it creates room to innovate & that's part of their model for how they create all encompassing platforms by building new features / sub products. Staff levels are part of how they preserve the advantages that allow them to not worry about competition...

As a citizen, I'm generally pro these companies being smaller because I would prefer to live in a world where big tech is smaller, has less control, and is less monopolistic. If I was an investor tho I would not want that. Those people really have no idea wtf they are doing.

There's a whole class of idiot investors whose only tactic is to create short term "growth" by cutting staff and turning their salaries into profits and then flipping their investment for money while watching the company burn after. I dislike them and I think they're real pos.

Anyway, dislike big tech as a force generally making the world a worse place--I do--but don't glom on to the worst players in the investment class to do so.
