I tire of "won't privacy hurt the economy" conversations...
-
Yes, b/c there are a number of high valuation companies whose entire business is buying and selling your data who refuse to change. Arguing to protect these companies on the basis of their economic footprint is like arguing we needed to keep slavery to keep Aetna's profits up.

Sometimes we do things because they are the correct thing to do and we should need no other motivation.
-
Ironically, I do believe capitalism and privacy can coexist. Hard to understand how I, not a capitalist, believe the system to be less fragile than people who have apparently made it a core property of their identity.
-
Historically capitalism, like all oppressive systems, has always proven quite adaptable. I see no reason it won't continue to be so, even if I might personally wish otherwise.

If you're a true capitalist you should know: change is never anti-competitive, it's always an opportunity. Don't mistake corporate laziness for economic policy.
