                The MTA should do LITERALLY ANYTHING to improve the subway system with that $5.5 million, instead of adding entirely unnecessary surveillance to the subway. Aren't we paying tons of extra NYPD cops to do this anyway?

              The NYC subway survived the 90s I really don't think it needs this. Also, Hochul wtf is this justification? Ridership isn't down b/c NYers feel unsafe about crime, it's because they feel unsafe about returning to the office during a plague & the MTA just dropped mask requirements

            If 10,000 cameras haven't helped I really doubt another 13,000 cameras are going to make a meaningful difference. Also... this is so disconnected from anyone who actually rides the subway...

          I remember, when I was a teen riding the subway everyone was always watching their bags, keeping their hands over their wallets in pockets, if you had a phone better not take it out b/c someone will snatch it. That's not the subway today...

        I rode in this morning & saw a bunch of Kindles out out, 3 iPads and a dozen or more phones loosely held in hands. That doesn't count the thousands of dollars of electronic billboards now stabled on to every train. I've ridden the train morning and very late at night, no issues.

      While the evening news might enjoy fearmongering over occasional subway crimes, security theater isn't going to *actually do* anything and the underlying social issues aren't solved by cameras, but the $5.5m could be better spent towards mental health services and homeless aid.
