lol just wild shit. Facebook truly does run itself like the Wild West. theintercept.com/2022/09/07/facebook-personal-data-no-accountability/

People will likely react on the assumption that Facebook is lying here but honestly, I believe this. Facebook is the company that had to build not one but two whole superset languages to stop their engineers from constantly crashing everything all the time....
-
Totally believable that Facebook has no idea just how much it is collecting on you b/c they bought into the philosophy that everyone just saves everything and figures it out later and then lots of people are copying chunks into closer-to-project DBs or static files etc...
-
Is Facebook watching everything you do? Yes Is Facebook storing it? Sure Is Facebook organized at this or is it just a messy college room floor where data is strewn everywhere & occasionally some ML or person picks up two pieces of paper and discovers everything about you. Yup
-
"Effectively the code is its own design document often." is like a reoccurring nightmare but every engineering manager constantly wakes up to it instead of from it.
-
I mean, is it *impossible* on a technical level as stated in this article. It's not *impossible* it's just extremely hard, time consuming and not profitable for them to do.
-
IMO any engineering manager or privacy engineer is likely reading this article and going to the bar, pouring themselves a big glass of whisky and quietly going 'yuuuuuuuuuuuup' under their breath.
-
-
All this is totally believable. Is it impossible to fix? No. Is there any incentive for Facebook to fix it? I dunno dude, it is likely cheaper for Facebook to just keep getting fined than to fix and maintain the fix for this problem, unless fines go way up.

The lesson: Any engineer tells me their code is 'self-documenting' or 'its own design document' and I send them straight to documentation bootcamp and so should you or one day you might be sitting in court being like 'man judge, I don't know how any of this stuff actually works'
