  1. There is tons of research indicating that closing schools was the right thing to do. In fact Michael Lewis (author of The Big Short) devotes a significant number of pages in The Premonition to why it was the right thing to do, that in fact we should have done it sooner... matthewstoller/1565456762320330753

      It's true that it wasn't 'the pandemic' that set kids back though. It was our half hearted embrace of isolation measures, our inability to properly fund & support schools & teachers to do new methods of teaching, & our continuing refusal to properly protect teachers from COVID...

        Only an economist would look at the potential toll of thousands of dead children, measure it against a bunch of arbitrary numbers, & declare it would be better if the children had been killed. And yes, putting kids in school when we know they would get sick is killing them...

          There are lots of things I like about Matt's work, but if he's going to fall into the trap that do many economics experts do of assuming that being able to do math means he understands everything, well, as ThoughtSlime might say, economists log off.

            Ignoring how arbitrary it is to maintain learning goal posts despite thousands of deaths across the nation, the largest problem in resolving these educational problems is hiring teachers. A problem we won't resolve by demanding they expose themselves to a greater risk of COVID.
