Hasbro has been trying real hard to make it otherwise but the problem is that D&D isn't actually a narrative universe--even if the materials reference one, it's really just a framework, and an intentionally generic framework...

Trying to extend the brand to a movie is always a bad idea. Not because it is intrinsically bad, but because the way that Hollywood mostly deals with highly valuable brands is fan service and tying creatives closely to the content of the media and... that ain't going to work...

Like no one is *excited* to see a Gelatinous Cube on screen. Fans of D&D aren't fans of the story. They're fans of what they can build w/it. Right choice would be to give it to a very creative writer & director & let them do whatever they want. Make it an anthology or something.

Like, Gelatinous Cube? Owlbear? That's not *awesome* that's *lol*. It's intrinsically silly, and in a laughing at the movie way, not with the movie.

Now on the other hand, if you wanted to make a Magic The Gathering film based on The Weatherlight Saga. I'd be 100% down for that.
