One of the things I'm starting to realize as I read more about Facebook's history is that for all its technical capacities it's really not great at thinking strategically about the real world or doing the sort of crafty stuff that other tech cos probably get away with often WillOremus/1509146917384724488
-
It's tempting to attribute this to heavier attention paid to Facebook, but I don't think that's it I think it's their tendency to use really creepy political operators and aim at really surface level engagements that even their own employees find off-putting.
-
Like this is the bluntest and most inelegant strategy to levy political force against Facebook. It's easy to think about how an experienced "liberal" lobbying arm at someplace like Google might approach a threat like TikTok, instead focusing entirely on backdoor convos...
-
Leaning heavily in on policy makers about the competition threat from China in a way that makes sense internally to a big tech company without increasing the surface area so large people start to get questioning it at various media cos...
-
But Facebook keeps hiring right-wing lobbying and PR firms like this and like theguardian.com/technology/2018/nov/21/facebook-admits-definers-pr-george-soros-critics-sandberg-zuckerberg which inevitably mis-match their strategy with their internal politics and inevitably lead to leaks.
-
And because Facebook keeps leaning on these right-wing entities its strategy always boils down to pumping out fear and anger as a PR strategy, which is not only bad, but exactly the bad look they don't want to get caught in.
-
It continues to be extremely strange to me that Facebook keeps caught doing bad things and then changes nothing about it's strategy. It's like every time you lift up the curtain there is a child in a wizard's hat cackling like a super villain running their crisis management...
-
It's Pinky and The Brain level thinking where they believe they're the crafty super geniuses but they keep shooting themselves in the foot over and over.
-
I imagine the "ex" Democratic Operatives that Google keeps hiring woke up, read this morning's article, and made a face like looking at a baby that shat itself. They must be embarrassing everyone and making the crafty stuff the other tech companies do harder to get away with.
-
I mean: “Dream would be to get stories with headlines like ‘From dances to danger: how TikTok has become the most harmful social media space for kids,’” lol wtf man. It's so so blunt of course it was going to get caught up. That's the thing Facebook doesn't seem to get...
-
Right wing political operatives *want to get caught* that's how they work by being unabashed and unashamed as they try to shove their position down your throat. It's a terrible alignment for Facebook which, I would assume, wants something other than a blunt instrument?
-
But whatever, better for all the journalists on the social tech and politics beats because Facebook just keeps dropping red meat on the floor like getting your company embarrassed is going out of style.
-
This thread is dedicated to the, I'm sure, dozen internal chats inside Facebook this morning about how they are unfairly focused on. It's not that Facebook is getting unfairly covered, I assure you, it's just big tech is playing neoliberal chess except FB is playing tic-tac-toe.
