YourComradeDad Yes, there are a bunch of reasons why, but recently there was this great comparison of Harry Potter goblins and Ferengi that gets to the core of one of the best explanations here, skip to the 1h30m mark: youtu.be/-1iaJWSwUZs

YourComradeDad One of the more interesting interviews I've seen was with Armin Shimerman on this very topic, who talked at some length about how the arc of the Ferengi in ST is specifically about humanizing the out group, and that the out group in ST is supposed to be a version of modern humans

YourComradeDad And as a result of that one of the interesting things he experienced touring is that wherever he went, he was asked if the Ferangi were supposed to be based on that culture's outgroup. So in Korea he was asked if they were based on the Japanese and so on...

YourComradeDad I also thought about it a lot during the Obama administration where some of the more common caricatures focused on his supposed big ears, the more racist the caricature the bigger the ears got...

YourComradeDad It made think of the Ferengi character design's pointed exaggerations of most features. The whole point, I think, is the exaggeration, in their capitalism, their misogyny, and in their features, because exaggeration is how we demonize and dehumanize the outgroup.
