      1. Ended up in a conversation about simulation theory and god it is so dumb but also I am just remembering how The Culture series (by Iain M Banks) bypassed the whole question with basic empathy...

The Culture deals with Simulation Theory thus: "Yes, we can simulate reality. No we're not going to do so often because then we're responsible for a universe we would be morally obligated to maintain forever. And if you do it for bad shitty reasons we're just going to stop you."

A whole book in The Culture series is basically The Culture dealing with a bunch of asshole sociaties that have decided simulating hell would be fun and The Culture going in and being like 'noooooope, that's not going to happen'.

It's truly a perfect encapsulation of dumb SV brain rot to even think longer about this than this thread. If you can imagine an infinite number of simulations each with more simulations than you mind as well imagine infinite empathy in place to keep you safe b/c why not?

I can also imagine that Superman is real and this is *his* simulation but it is not a particularly useful construct for considering action or interesting to talk about and I hate that literally any thought, much less the insane millions of dollars of "charity" goes into this.

Truly the fact that we're having regular iterations of this conversation is final proof that we're not actually living in a simulation because who the hell would bother to simulate anything that dumb.

We lost Iain M Banks way too soon. The Culture books are just increasingly relevant. Imagine a space future where the primary organizing principle is giving a shit about the universe around you. I re-read these for a reason.
