It really amazes me sometimes when I go on to Facebook for some reason that this thing is so huge, such a monolith in our lives, and the design looks like it would have been rejected by Friendster.

Why is it so ugly? Is this a signal? Is it one of those things akin to looking for fraud victims to perpetrate additional fraud? It's so ugly in order to really push loyalty or bounce? Like if you can use this we've really got you locked in? I don't understand.
