I think the most frustrating thing right now about the crypto currency movement is its central hypothesis: individuals will be driven thru self interest to solve problems. But we live in a time where it is very clear that relying on individual self interest garners no solutions.

At no point in history has it been more clear the libertarian model is insufficient. There's no individualist solution to climate change. There's no individualist solution to pandemic. These problems cannot be resolved by waiting on parties' monetary self interest to be realized.

The deeper I read into crypto currency communities the more it seems (with a very few exceptions) to be an extractive project, extracting resources, currency, and one's self from society rather than face the prospect of having to contribute to the urgent need of the present.
-
Together with the so-called Metaverse, one can't help but get the feeling that the self labeled web3 community is mostly capitalists throwing a childish temper tantrum in an attempt to extract their toys and interests and retreat to die hot & blissful in self-sovereignty.
-
Through this lens, so much of the rhetoric feels like a fraud, a misdirection, look at this hand while the other throws a smoke bomb to cover the ultra rich (and hopeful hanger-ons) as they escape from their horror at the prospect of having, and perhaps being forced, to help.

There are people involved in these projects who think differently. But by their very nature crypto currency projects are driven by the profiteers not the idealists.
