                    Businesses built their models & customer acquisition budgets on the assumption highly individualized targeting would be there forever. They know it's a bad thing well enough to not talk about it, they know people are angry about it... they just never believed change could happen

                like most ad tech reforms, they thought all this talk about privacy was all sizzle, no steak. Because whenever the industry has promised to self regulate it hasn't actually changed anything. But things are changing now...

              I have no tears for the companies that failed to prepare for clearly coming increases in marketing costs any more than for the publisher that refused to have a website along with their print edition. Sea changes happen, but none was easier to see coming than this one.

            And if you were working with an agency that didn't prepare you... Fire them. But does that impact cause me to be concerned for the future of small internet businesses? Only the preexisting ones. New ones will quickly learn that their going to need to budget differently...

          And this is capitalism yo. There will always be new ones. And I'm sure there are plenty that aren't complaining because they *did* prepare....

      oh no. They might have to compete on product quality, or support antitrust regulation instead of aiming to be the next monopoly, or do market research outside of an ad targeting panel. I can't feel much sympathy for companies that can't adapt to such an incredibly obvious trend.
