    thensim0nsaid I mean... ads? The answer here is you capture people's attention and direct some portion of it to ads. Especially if you are a local newsroom, direct sales to local biz is especially useful for your readers and the local business. Even if it isn't display ads it's ads...

      thensim0nsaid Like you could argue for some form of subs/notification prompts/texts instead of display ads, but the realization of value will still be using that communication channel in order to funnel user attention towards an business's ads

        thensim0nsaid in purest form, display ads are just one methodology of connecting reader attention to business offers. But that is a thing of value to readers and also... no matter what particular methodology or channel, ends up being recognized as an "ad".

          thensim0nsaid The more I think about it, the more I think that the better question is probably: why do we need ads that are *personalized* down to the user level, to which there really isn't a great answer that I can think of.
