                1. People are responsible for using Facebook... But also Facebook as a product enables their behavior. "We don't make you use us" is not a good argument for ignoring a challenge to society's health any more than it was a good argument not to regulate tobacco. nickclegg/1377225669399048195

The problem is absolutely people... but the tricks of the trade on engagement and capture of user attention ain't nothing. Nor is Facebook's attempts to deform networks to favor traffic to itself in the form of Facebook Zero and what is now called internet dot org.

It really hurts your "we're just being used by people" argument when you've created situations where Facebook is the only part of the web huge swaths of users can freely access.

And finally yes, the problem is, in part, the people that use FB. That's why it's Too Big To Moderate... But I can think of an easy solution to that: Break Facebook up. If your company is too big to have a healthy relationship with users... well that's where regulators step in

Applying Facebook's argument: 'Critics of guns say that they're devices built to kill and we should regulate them... but isn't it people who use those guns?' Hmmm

'Critics portrayal of heroin say it robs users of free will but is this really true, can you really say the drug takes you over when some people quit?' Facebook nooooo

'look coal power is here to stay, it isn't going to magically go away, and obviously coal power benefits society, we can't go back to yesteryear when you used candles, so no need to regulate it or care about pollution' Wait Facebook that's not right at all

You cannot possibly take seriously your attempt to pretend a huge global company and individuals are equally matched in power over the system?

It always amazes me for tech companies talk about disruption, but when it's their turn via facing regulation suddenly they're inevitable forces of nature that can't be stopped.

It really amazes me just how much this whole argument makes Facebook sound like a tobacco company arguing that it only needs labels not serious laws.
