      simonowens I would argue: 1. those deals were always sort of sketchy and unacceptable even though they happened. 2. Substack pitched itself differently, as a remedy to problems of pubs & biz models like those (Medium excepted) & to replicate their power structures strikes differently

    simonowens The problem is not just their tactics it is the difference between their tactics and their marketing...

      simonowens Especially how they leveraged specific writers to bootstrap their credibility and then turned around and used the earned reputation to fund people who are opposed to those writers being full legit humans. Which is very different from Forbes or HuffPo.
