  1. HI This is your REGULAR REMINDER not to share the photo of a mass murder, giving them the exposure they desire, by making that photo the only photo in your story or by explicitly setting it as the Open Graph Share Image for your story. THAT IS BAD. Don't do it.

This is a long known issue, and your website should HAVE a protocol in place to look at and review share-card images of your articles that appear in social media when dealing with mass murders. ethics.journalism.wisc.edu/2019/12/12/when-coverage-is-what-they-want/

Some journalism ethics folks argue that you shouldn't even *name* the murderer, much less share his mugshot around. This was 3 years ago: poynter.org/ethics-trust/2019/not-naming-mass-shooters-much-is-now-the-norm/

If you, a news consumer, see a publication or outlet doing the extremely unethical thing of explicitly putting a photo of the shooter in the share card of their article, call them out directly, tag them in your objection: theatlantic.com/national/archive/2012/07/mass-shootings-coverage/260165/

Think about how you can share photos that are not salacious but show impact instead? There are numerous protests against anti-Asian violence. *Perhaps use photos of those instead* and be careful in choosing your hed.

Especially because, for many people, their only exposure to the story may be via open graph image card shares! Chronotope/1357428442447364097

6 years of me telling you not to do this entirely *unethical* thing with your news media posts about mass murders and it keeps happening.

And also... don't show dead bodies in share imgs! There are no warnings or blocks to stop people from seeing what are fundamentally traumatizing images. Just be aware & disciplined about images that are going to show up at random on people's social feed! washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/03/17/atlanta-spa-shootings-live-updates/
