jeremybmerrill swodinsky tomgara TimothyBuckSF cwarzel I've heard that before but as someone who was a journalist and a coder and now does more coding I think it is a nice excuse a lot of tech people make to not feel bad about the fact that they don't think about the ethics of what they are doing.

jeremybmerrill swodinsky tomgara TimothyBuckSF cwarzel At the end of the day we all make choices & the line of thinking 'journalists don't code because then they would stop being journalists' ignores reality & is a nice excuse for making tech people feel like they are right for living on ultracapitalist principles b/c everyone does.

jeremybmerrill swodinsky tomgara TimothyBuckSF cwarzel I was on a call with a person working in one of the new ad tech trade group coalitions who said that he believes in the idea that this needs to happen and he took a pay cut to do it and then noted the size of the paycut and it was the size of my entire salary right now...

jeremybmerrill swodinsky tomgara TimothyBuckSF cwarzel I'm not trying to shame this person, I'm just noting for those who *do code* in the media space, they are often there because they made a choice... and people who work in big tech are often there because they told themselves a nice story that obviated the need to make a choice.

jeremybmerrill swodinsky tomgara TimothyBuckSF cwarzel I'm not saying I'm the best engineer / coder in the world or anything, but I've turned down recruiters from Google and Facebook because at the end of the day, I have values that cannot coexist in that space. Not everyone does. Perhaps not everyone can afford to. But...

jeremybmerrill swodinsky tomgara TimothyBuckSF cwarzel Journalists do learn to code and keep being journalists and the argument that somehow low pay invalidates journalism, or implies it is produced badly, is an immense line of BS that ignores that there are more incentives in life than capital.

jeremybmerrill swodinsky tomgara TimothyBuckSF cwarzel This is a very complicated thing I don't mean to over simply, sometimes there are other factors that cause people to go to big tech. But still. I wrote a longish piece, in a different context, about it for the record. startedwithatweet.substack.com/p/who-works-engineering-at-skullcrusher
