    knowtheory acfou swodinsky So I checked by watching network requests & it appears to me that Google crawls the links in Twitter, gets the originals (as opposed to the t dot co links we don't really see but are actually there), and shoots you directly there. It doesn't pass through anything Twitter at all

      knowtheory acfou swodinsky So basically, if you have a website and a major Twitter account, some--presumably significant--percent of your Google traffic wouldn't get to your site without Twitter. Thus encouraging you to invest time and effort in Google over Twitter in a potentially disproportionate way.

        knowtheory acfou swodinsky Unless you break out specific campaign utm or shortened links for Twitter to try and track it independently of the referral data, which presumably larger companies do, but perhaps not many else.
