Am I crazy to think that, short of dying, there's nothing either candidate could do now that would change the outcome? I'm glad reporters are capturing this craziness, but I sorta wish I could turn on a "no presidential election news" mode & get congressional and court news only.

Presidential races were a lot easier to deal with when it didn't feel like the existence of the nation, and my ability to survive within it, were hinging on how many white supremacists were intimidating voters and if a Supreme Court Justice got shoved through the process.

Covering the election in 2007 as a journalist was actually fun, if exhausting. But none of the normal rules apply. If the president said a dumb thing in past elections, it would have an impact, but now it is likely the least important thing one could cover.

Like, we have at least two ongoing eco disasters that are doing terrible things to people and also are likely to displace voters in a way that will--at least--alter the popular vote. I care a lot more about that than if the president is spreading COVID by being a moron.
