Instead of watching the debate last night and getting sad and angry I decided to play video games. Reviewing headlines this morning and as far as I can tell... Biden didn't talk? Trump managed to entirely center coverage on himself. Media is making the same mistakes.
-
It's the same exact mistake from 2016. Trump is being rewarded with massive coverage for becoming increasingly radical and dominating the newshole so heavily I wouldn't be surprised to see Biden lose points in name recognition.
-
You might say: oh the president announcing explicit support for a white supremacy and mysogyny group is indeed the most important story and while it is in theory a big deal... 1. We already knew this ...
-
2. He couched it in such a way that it will spread to his supporters who will take it as support while he will disavow the meaning applied to it in future press and turn it around to day the media is attacking him with unfair interpretation which will also energize his supporters
-
The problem is two fold: all coverage rewards Trump because it's either supportive (energizes) or an attack (energizes) and further gives him more amplification. And...
-
the current event is so outrageous it tends to get reported without context, so even though there is a pattern most news consumers don't see it.
-
For example... I've yet to read reporting on the debate which shows something so basic as to link his comments back to Charlottesville and what happened there as a result of his 'both sides' response.
-
This is not the right way to handle it and not a great sign for the election.
-
The really scary part is how this approach to covering him fundamentally rewards him for continuing escalation. As long as the media continues to cover him like this, he's going to get worse. Reporters who don't change their approach should consider themselves partially to blame.
