  1. This is quite an article because it manages to skirt around the core issue: industrial labor moves to China because it has 1. A non-free market centrally commanded economy; 2. It lacks even the current sad state of our country's labor protections. foreignpolicy.com/2020/08/12/china-industry-manufacturing-cold-war/

I think the problems it presents are accurate, but I think the solutions are imaginary. To compete with Chinese industry in America world either mean destroying labor protections or creating an economy where the government substantially subsidized huge swaths of industry.

We're not going to be able to compete on being shitty to labor, not only should we find that ethically unacceptable, but it's a race we've already lost. So we should approach as a rich country: make our competitive advantage low priced products w/high quality of life behind them.

There's only one way to do that my friends: - fully socialized health care - fully unionized work places - substantial government funding to support quality of life for labor, assuring baseline living conditions - free higher ed - substantial government funding of companies

Be wary of people who look at China and look at American industry and claim this situation calls for us to treat labor worse, to demolish unions, to make our own predatory loans. That's a race to the bottom that is deeply injurious to us as a nation and one we can't win.

There's no way to win that battle using the economy and form of capitalism we have right now. The only answers that we can use are far to the left of the political status quo in America right now.

And we either need to implement them quickly as a rich country now or become a failed country later.

We're going to be going through an election soon where both sides are going to talk about competing with China: watch how they frame their strategies.
