We can see the impact on local journalism well enough right now, but we won't really understand the impact until things start opening again, and even then the decreased number of local outlets will mean we won't have useful measures in many areas.

A lot of news orgs were betting on local businesses to aquire digital knowledge or evolve via changing ownership to have it. But beyond the permanent shutdowns, millennials will be left even less suited to start or maintain local bizs after all this.

Even though local journalism outlets have worked to train up local businesses, it's hard to see a future where money and stability exist to assure the continuation, much less improvement, of that particular virtuous cycle of mutual support.

In my experience, local journalism outlets play a huge role in helping local businesses improve their marketing efforts, not only via the sales process. We really have no idea how slowing, & in some areas destruction, of that symbiotic relationship will impact local economies.
