    1. Oh boy my Last fm 2019 listening report is ready! I've got some good feels and some bad ones about it. I've spent a chunk of last year trying to really widen my musical tastes and try things outside my comfort zone. Some weeks I've been very successful...

Like the last week of the decade, I really had a lot of fun listening to a ton of Cumbia, Afrikaans, folk punk and Israeli music, all outside of my normal listening habits previous years.

I've tweeted before about really falling in love with some genres in other languages, like Luk Thung Chronotope/1208156156205699073 so I am excited to see how it turned out on the scale of the year.

I knew I hadn't really started pushing into new categories until the 2nd half of the year, but I was still disappointed to see that although a number of out-of-my-safety-zone genres rose to my weekly and monthly charts, none of them impacted my year-long trends, except folk punk.

(or as Spotify sometimes calls it, and I prefer, Murderfolk)

But on the good side, my discovery stats were way up. Year over Year, I listened to 76% more artists, 67% more albums, and 56% more traffics. Those are pretty big increases in the variety of music I consumed. Esp. considering I had only 29% more listens overall.

And the percent of my listens that were new artists went way up! Even more exciting, of the top four tracks I discovered and listened to multiple times, 3 of them are from artists outside the US, two are non-English songs. They sit at 1, 6 and 8 in my overall tracks listened to.

Anyway, it's clear I still can get a lot better at spending chunks of my listening time challenging myself to try not just new music but new types of music. But as a half-year goes, I think it is a decent start. What I'm saying is when Last fm calls me 50% mainstream, I earned it

And if you're looking for some place to start, let me recommend my favorite track of the last year, Japanese poetry rap "鳴らして" by "春ねむり" Spotify: open.spotify.com/track/7IIRN7KZksXp9ieBFmNuHI?si=sRJ5UkegR6mryJ9I9Bkb2w YouTube: youtu.be/RnOwiPYe7bg

(At least my favorite by number of listens! There will be a more for me to recommend in this new year.)

Also, while these are new discoveries this year for me personally (to use the language of last fm & Spotify), one of the great things was stumbling into the large and pre-existing fandoms that many of the artists and genres I'm listening to have. The new thing discovered is me :)
