            1. I haven't seen the latest film yet, but the more prequel and forward Star Wars I consume the more confused I am about the role of the Jedi in like... the scope of civilization and history. I was always under the impression that they were basically Wild-West-Style-Texas-Rangers.

At least in regard to their role in the larger civilization. And then their meditative religious-ish philosophy & approach to problems was supposed to draw from some combination of 70s hippies and samurai-as-presented-by-Kurosawa. But it really just keeps getting more muddled.

I don't understand why... wouldn't it have been easier to perpetually treat them as roaming lawmen and dispute resolvers empowered to keep the peace whose approach was less shooty more get-in-touch-with-your-feelings-y? It's a pretty clear place for them with lots of opportunity.

The Thrawn Trilogy (no longer canon, I know) leaned deeply into that exact concept and it worked really well for placing the Jedi historically into context and even leveraged it for understanding how to re-integrate them into society. I thought it fit really well!

And... I dunno... the idea that there were Jedi "generals" made sense only in the context of the Jedi being on the ground and knowing people so that they weren't so much military leaders as guides with authority to figure out engagement tactics on the fly, but not grand strategy.

It also was great to think of them as roaming lawmen because it opened up a lot more opportunities for story telling (just like Texas Rangers in old west tales) because they had a lot of leeway on how to problem solve (it's a big galaxy) and there are lots of story hooks.
