  1. Not sure when this started but Google is using structured data and images from a variety of photo services to create what appears to be robot-built AMP Stories at the top of search pages, further obscuring sources and likely to decrease the chance users will click out of Google.

      It pulls data out of stories and, though it links to the origin where it is pulling a direct quote from, there are no quote marks, it isn't in a pull quote format and the authors bylines are not included. Sure doesn't feel like adequate attribution.

        Given the irregularity of the positions of the text being pulled, I'd assume that some human work is involved in creating this. google.com/amp/story/s/www.google.com/search/static/gs/m02114t.html

          The source of metadata like the 1st slide is likely a third party, but inside this context source is unclear. On flip side, this 2nd ex cited an EU source and pulled the quote directly, word for word, from the middle of the linked article in a way that EU pubs famously dislike.

            Isn't the extraction of exact text without quote marks or clear citation, in order to create a wholly new work, traditionally considered unethical? What do people think of this?

                I do think it is worth examining this as its own thing, it lives in its own URL & is only accessible after a click-through from Google Search Page. So questions to ask are: is this a wholly new work? Are citations sufficient? Is it likely to impact traffic from sources it uses?
