'You object to tech thing but also have tech thing' being thrown out by startup defenders is always ridiculous. Like, should people working on self driving cars not drive? We all exist in the world we're trying to change. We do so 1 step at a time. Part of the process is critics.

Like: 'hey buddy, You use crypto currency but also have a credit card' see how dumb this gets?

Whenever I see this argument, all I think is that the person making it doesn't have a substantial argument to actually make. All they've got is knee jerk defensiveness. I use Foursquare and also object to IRL ad beacons. This is not a hypocritical position.

I am hardly the first one to make this observation of course. thenib.com/mister-gotcha

If you have an actual defense for why a product feature should exist, write that. If your defense is "but X is a hypocrite" that's not a good, or even effective, argument.

Also, a journalist actively criticizing aspects of the very system that pays part of their paychecks seems to me to be a sign of a very healthy and independent editorial structure with a solid and well defined paper wall. Like... how journalism is supposed to work?

I mean... This tweet thread coming to you from a guy who's very meager claim to fame is hating on ad tech while currently working on ways to make it better, safer, more usable, less privacy invasive & building a better methodology. Fixing problems requires experiencing them.
