The most insidious thing about the whole sneering at a politician for being a bartender thing is that we are *supposed* to be governed by everyday citizens. The only major qualifications needed for Congress is to be an American and to have the support of your fellow Americans.

Permanent professional politicians or a political class are both bad for democracy. The real desirable state is if all of Congress were ex bartenders with access to great resources. Isn't this why politicians have been burnishing their blue collar credentials all these years?

The Library of Congress exists in major part so congress people need not come in with all knowledge, but learn on the job. That's why it's the Library *of Congress*, because no one can be expected to know everything. Congress people need not be learned, just curious & engaged.
