I am experimenting with Medium and starting to think that any network effect it might have had to amplify distribution is much decreased. Where people *do* succeed in making money on Medium I suspect it has more to do with their personal networks than their Medium ones.Permalink On twitter.com

I think it is likely that if you have a large audience on other platforms that has more to do with your success on Medium than anything else and therefore you could port that audience to any platform paying on similar terms and make similar earnings...Permalink On twitter.com

If someone wanted to just boot up a nearly identical service with similar payment methodology I suspect you could easily challenge Medium with just minor differentiation if you were able to bring some writers around to move over with other incentives.On twitter.com

Which makes me think that Medium's biggest threat isn't publishers or social platforms... it's Wix rolling out some easy cross-network micro-payment methodology or something like that. The thought of that is making me lol.Permalink On twitter.com
