                    1. How do you fuck up The Markup, literally the easiest across the home plate pitch for a journalism outlet ever conceived? Like, it's obviously needed, wanted, useful, and now... this mess?! sapna/1120695592529874945

How can someone be so stupid to not realize this was going to be a PR disaster and find a different approach to whatever is going on?

This is so easy to not screw up. How does this mess happen?

Also, how does the co-founder not have a better contract then whatever is happening here would indicate?

Even if somehow the goal was to be better positioned to raise funds, which doesn't make sense because it was already very well positioned, kicking out the person for whom funds were given is obviously a bad idea.

And more than that: you don't need to go to op-eds, data driven journalism has consistently shown Facebook to be a cesspool without any bias or opinion involved.

Doing the work would have accomplished everything everyone wanted, it's all so baffling.

If you are a journalist you have to know at least a few people you can trust in PR. If you are running a journalism startup and shit goes wrong perhaps call them first. Like... basic communications or PR managers would be helpful here.

I think I had read their staff numbered 15? I'm having trouble finding where I read it, so I might be wrong. If that is the correct count, this means a third of The Markup's staff has left.

NYT reported a total staff of ~15 including editorial and other parts of the org. So yeah, a third of the org has left over Julia Angwin being pushed out.
