I actually really like The Outline's design, but man that business plan, at least from the outside, did not look well thought out. Cool new ad formats are a good idea, but impossible without epic traffic. Goldberg is right on there.
-
Also, not great when you cause your freelancers to band together to tell you to fk off.
-
What's unclear here: will sizzle tech site with bad name also be under Goldberg or is that somehow an independent operation? I guess not.
-
Not really sure what Goldberg wants with this stack of sites though, link juice? That's so 08. Their... tech? Seems unlikely and also he's got solid tech. I guess he really is just playing the SEO game, but that has a cap. Is he just going for the good PR as a fund/value raiser?
-
Also, why buy relatively quality operations like this Gawker and The Outline for the SEO? Surely Mic has more articles than he could need for that.
-
It all feels like an investor storytime or IPO tactic, but beyond 'look at our cool properties' and ego, I'm starting to lose the thread of the narrative. Also, how much do money types really care about pure media hype type places?
-
I guess it could also be inflating the value for sale! aexm/1111070469157879809?s=19
