WSJ core subscription strategy: - corporate subscribers - people who enjoy physical papers - people who want to be seen reading the WSJ. - the olds who have just realized their phone can also browse the web WSJ Apple News strategy - millennials & others who can't afford a sub mathewi/1110529688349212672

This is a real good time to note that anyone can read the WSJ totally subscription-free at no cost on the Quartz app
-
Will it cannibalize their existing subs? Very little I bet. People think individuals pay for subscriptions for access, but they don't. People pay for subscriptions for: convenience, status, and philosophy. If you have a WSJ subscription for the last two reasons, you won't switch
-
If they pay for the first and are a heavy Apple news user then you might transfer or you might not, but if a reader is already used to accessing the news outside of that from their app or site, the idea of transferring likely won't come up.
-
Also, having the priciest subscription in the land gives WSJ a lot of room to play around.
-
That said, I don't think WSJ has accounted for the rich Apple freaks set, which includes a number of olds, that group will buy anything Apple does and are more interested in "doing X the Apple way" than any other factor.
-
Never has a group of tech consumers acted consistently less in their own self interest and against all logic than the Apple Cultists
-
Anyway, unassociated with that issue, Apple is throwing its weight around in an alarming way that shouldn't be allowed in a healthy regulatory environment but will also likely seem like a good idea for a number of pubs Chronotope/1095929705193181184

One need only look at the App store to see that there will be long term negative consequences, but considering the alternatives there is a class of publication for which this will be a better deal than the one they get ad-funded. Chronotope/1095930636253233153

Having an inkling of the economics involved, I can't really argue against Apple News Subscription involvement but I sure wish I could! From a philosophical and ethical viewpoint it is extraordinarily troubling! Also, it creates an opportunity for clones from creepier platforms
