For giggles: If Elizabeth Warren's plan went through and distinct marketplace / market competitor lines forced Google to be split up it would create a lot of different companies. Respond with a chunk of Google that would likely have to exist as its own business.
-
I'll start us off: -Google Cloud Hosting There are other more obvious ones, but I think we'd have to see cloud hosting spun off from its parent companies, as both a user and a provider of a system that uses market-like economics for pricing, it and AWS would face scrutiny.

Would also be interested in hearing an argument for breaking off Chrome or Chrome Extensions under this rule. Not sure if would come into play, but fun to think about.

Totally could see this. Play Store is a marketplace on which Google has apps. Seems clearly defined to me. phil_schinis/1104092690822647809

AdWords has a clear argument against it staying integrated into Search. The idea of a Search without it in the same house is fascinating. I could see Analytics, but curious what your argument would be LancePaters1 ? LancePaters1/1104092686267662337

LancePaters1 Google buys and sells domains, as well as integrating them in a variety of ways. It's a big more of a stretch than the others, especially because domain sales is a relatively healthy marketplace, but I could see it reasonably challenged! bongcrosby/1104093726140497922

LancePaters1 Oooo, unrelated to marketplaces but this is a good argument. Ties in especially well when you realize Waze is *also* an ad marketplace. KevinReuning/1104094734543437825

LancePaters1 (Depending on how you look at the integration of Google Maps and Google Search you could totally argue that Maps is an ad marketplace as well)
-
LancePaters1 This is a harder argument, because the relationship between phones and OSs as market and marketplace isn't clear, but it also came out of a sketchy acquisition. Seems likely it (or Android) would be considered! kaneness/1104095244520513537

LancePaters1 Yeah, If Google's ad server and ad exchange would have to be split, it seems impossible that YouTube could stay in the Google mothership under the proposed rules. What would an independent YouTube even look like?! future_of_music/1104095367791083520

LancePaters1 Oh man, I forgot Firebase existed. This brings up a cool thought experiment, to what extent is dev tooling a product or marketplace? Is its easy integration of Google products anti-competitive? ferkungamaboobo/1104097041142202379
-
LancePaters1 For real, especially with YouTube. YouTube isn't a profitable business last time I checked and it would likely be even less so outside of Google. A whole new era of video hosting would spawn and they would compete on new things. Like... gasp, quality? future_of_music/1104097479098798085

LancePaters1 Also, if YouTube got split off, nooooooo way YouTube Red could continue to exist, right?

I don't know how this would work but it is an exciting idea, like an earlier era of TV regulation focused on enhancing the public debate. dmarti/1104097937624248321
