I will never understand the inclination to do Dark Phoenix saga instead of literally any other of the thousands of X-Men stories. Why do it if you're not going to actually do it right? Why do it knowing that it'll put the series into hibernation for years when you screw it up?

That's the thing. A proper version of Dark Phoenix is a multi film affair and it requires chunks of the universe none of the X-Men films seen willing to put in. Even though they could! GotG and latest Avengers showed we can do super heroes in space and people are there for it.

Beyond all that, frankly the story is of an era. I'm not sure if it really works as well today. Even if it did, to pull it off requires a preceding Jean-focused film to properly give her character agency. Something which young Jean has even less of this time than the last.

Anyway, stop doing Dark Phoenix films. Give me a Quire and Eye Boy crime film or just actually go in on the Harry Potter part of it and do a magical teen drama with Idie. Genre hop! Do something new! Just stop the depressing bad Dark Phoenix films.

Like how easy is it to come to with literally any other preexisting or new X-men story that would sound good in a pitch?

X-men + GotG: Scott is abducted by aliens b/c shocker his dad is a gruff space pirate who gets things done. Jean leads the X-men into space, gets teen crush on def-not-Wolverine-Scott's-Dad which he appropriately turns down, they rescue damseled Scott.

X-men + James Bond: this is the XForce, they do in the dark what the XMen need to survive. Send them on literally any mission. This is the only one where you can ask Wolverine back.

X-men + Battle Royale: X-men are pitted against X-men by Arcade. Xavier must come to terms with the fact that he's built a child army. This is an obvious one and has pretty much already been done in the comics.

X-men + Her: The Danger Room is alive and the kids must escape its vengeful clutches while unsure what is or is not reality. Xavier must come to terms with its Weird Love for him. This one is a parable about technology's uncontrolled advance!

And that's not even getting into their potential as allegories to have discussions about both otherness and terrorism. You could get good and serious if you wanted!
