            1. oh boy nothing tells me you are ready to have a genuine conversation where you are ready to genuinely listen to more sides of the argument than starting off by calling other people's conversations 'smug virtue signalling'

HOT TIP: 'virtue signalling' is a phrase that instantly translates to 'you are only arguing to show off and not because you genuinely believe your argument' which means if I *do* genuinely believe the argument than you're telling me that you don't respect me or my argument.

Maybe you don't realize this and think it is just a phrase *floating around* the internet so let me tell you: the phrase 'virtue signalling' is an instant indicator for a lot of people, particularly those in journalism who have experienced a '*gate', that you're an asshole.

You may not be an asshole, but it makes you look like one. This is true in most every use, not just the particular one I'm thinking of right now. Sort of ironic I guess, because the phrase virtue signalling is I guess its own virtue signalling... except not the virtue you think.

In fact the one phrase guaranteed to make me pay less attention to you and have less respect for you and your startup or argument or whatever it is than 'blockchain startup' is 'virtue signalling'...

Because what you're really doing, whether you realize it or not, is telling me that you align with the type of people who would really love it if they could call up SWAT teams on me and the people who I consider associates.

Now we can have a conversation about the exact scientific definition of virtue signalling, but context matters, and this is the modern context. So perhaps it would be worthwhile to instead take a moment and think about the actual arguments involved in what you're about to mock...

And instead of dismissing it as smug virtue signalling, use an actual debating technique like Steel Man to show that you respect and understand the viewpoint you are trying to engage but respectfully disagree. lifehacker.com/utilize-the-steel-man-tactic-to-argue-more-effectivel-1632402742

If you're not going to do that, at least don't start with insulting both the beliefs, the genuine nature of those beliefs, and the virtue of the people who state those beliefs, especially if they're your intended audience.

Real life isn't an episode of South Park and you aren't going to somehow magically win my respect by doing the polite equivalent of 'hey you asshole, you piece of shit, you ignorant fool, look at me and respect my Morty-like intelligence'

Fun aside: I actually have moderation rules for my Facebook page, because having genuine discussions require some limits and respect hacktext.com/2014/09/my-12-rules-for-talking-with-others-on-the-internet-2011/
