metaviv I dunno, I say banning is bad only if the goal of the internet is to have single monolithic entities controlling all conversations in a particular sphere. But isn't that a thing we want to prevent? It's a big internet. Let Infowars start its own social network. Let everyone.

metaviv Like... isn't the real core problem here that we've allowed single entities and single platforms too much control and influence to begin with? I mean... yeah, a ban would be *bad* for Facebook. But it would be an overall good for the rest of us.

metaviv Like... if Infowars is so critical to some people, or has such import, then wouldn't those people follow it on whatever platform it sits? And if it is just playing the algorithm to enrich itself at Democracy's expense, and humans don't care, then it is a virus on Facebook.

metaviv .davewiner has a point in his thread: it shouldn't be up to technologists. But also it can't be left up to anyone else under Facebook's control b/c the obvious bias there, and if it isn't, why would Facebook listen to them?

metaviv davewiner As long as Facebook is so large among social networks it never has any real incentives to improve except for avoiding public shaming and governmental regulation. And Facebook's reaction to GDPR seems to indicate it doesn't really fear the 2nd.
